As students progress through the education system, they grow to love various extracurricular activities offered by schools, including sports. The extra responsibilities of a sport force athletes to find a balance, but the potential tradeoffs seem advisable as sports can lead to college scholarships and an overall superior education. Although education proves important for the future, teenagers should focus on sports to gain a free higher education.
New federal policies stemming from the Trump Administration’s “Big Beautiful Bill” have led to a reduction in federal student loan options for graduate and professional degrees. These reductions can discourage students from pursuing higher education. In addition, during the past decades, tuition costs have continuously increased. Scholars can overcome these financial discouragements through full-ride scholarships, which colleges provide to strong, high-level players. Scouts from different institutions attend high school sports games to find eligible players and then show their interest by extending scholarships, which allow students the opportunity to commit to a university where they can pursue both sports and academics.

Although scholarships provide students an opportunity for free education, they limit the options of universities a sports player can attend. High schoolers only gain the opportunity for a scholarship at a university if the scouts see their value and want them to join their team. This can lead to high schoolers picking a college solely based on recruitment instead of their academic goals. High school students also may move schools for a higher chance for playing time in their sport, which can cause challenges in their academics due to different teachers, their distance from school or even different class offerings.
“This year, since I’m a senior, I’ve seen a lot of my friends start to commit to colleges for sports. The process is very difficult for them as they get watched their whole junior year and have to document every game they have for colleges. Sometimes athletes don’t get the offers they want and end up going to a college that doesn’t feel like home,” magnet senior Nishan Patel said.
Even though high schoolers may feel tied to a college if they receive a scholarship, they still hold the choice to pick the best college for their future. Depending on what career students want to pursue, the years a student needs to stay in school may vary, but a scholarship can lower the athlete’s student debt. Scholarships also provide students the ability to attend an out-of-state college for free when they cannot afford the out-of-state costs.
Statistics prove that at least 80 percent of students who receive scholarships for college due to sports complete a bachelor’s degree within four years. Similarly, student graduation rates exceed the rates of the regular student body. This data proves that students who take part in sports teams succeed in academics. Athletic individuals can gain a scholarship in numerous sports, ultimately leading to future success for any high school sports player. This data proves crucial in showing that sports support academics superiorly compared to alternative activities.
The passion that students feel toward their chosen sports also acts as a motivator for sports players to continue to do well with their education. Institutions, both high schools and universities, set requirements for their players’ grades as they believe education comes first for college players. University coaches specifically utilize the athlete’s Grade Point Average (GPA) as an indicator of a student’s aptitude in their classes. The teams require members to maintain a specific GPA from their first year till graduation to maintain their spot. At the high school level, sports teams require players to pass their classes and maintain acceptable behavior to remain on the team. As students feel increased passion toward their sport, they work to follow these requirements and maintain a balance between school and sports.
“I know that we need to be passing all of our classes to stay on the tennis team. It isn’t hard for me, but I know some people have issues with it. I think it’s good to have this because everyone needs an education, even if they are super talented athletically,” magnet senior Lena Gray said.
While balancing sports and academics may seem challenging, the long-term benefits of sports scholarships help students succeed. Scholarships not only assist with the financial burden of college, but also drive students to maintain strong academics. Overall, sports provide athletes the ideal opportunity for a higher education free of cost while allowing them to continue playing the game they love.
