Varsity boys basketball controlled the pace of Friday night’s region matchup and willed their way to a 64-53 victory at Harrison. Junior forward Kenny Ume and junior point guard Ricky Shearman accounted for 42 of NC’s scores, tallying 23 and 19 respectively.

“I like it when we get going like that,” Ume said. “We both get a lot of minutes so its expected of us.”

In the season’s most highly anticipated matchup, the Warriors prevailed and defeated rival Kennesaw Mountain 61-51.

In a tight contest in the second quarter, the game turned as junior point guard Ricky Shearman pulled a Rondo-esque move, bringing the ball behind his back for a fake pass, which shook the defender off for the easy lay-in. On the ensuing possession, junior guard Myles Lake stole the ball and went coast-to-coast for the fast break layup, as the crowd erupted as Kennesaw’s coach called timeout to stop the run. The Warriors never looked back.

NC lead by 16 early in the third quarter when the Mustangs came storming back, cutting the Warrior lead to 38-45. However, that was as close as they would get. North Cobb ended the game on a 16-13 run to preserve the lead.

“Their press slowed us down, they were getting at us, but we were able to come together and get it done,” said Ume.

With these two wins, North Cobb clinched the third-seed and a bye in the region tournament, which will be played at Kennesaw Mountain.
