Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the traditions, cultures and stories that shape generations and continue to enrich Spanish-speaking communities today. From vibrant cultural expressions to groundbreaking contributions in fields such as art, science and leadership, these legacies stand as a source of inspiration. This month offers a time to celebrate history while also recognizing the present impact and future promise of Hispanic voices.

NC’s Hispanic Heritage celebration October 3, 2025, highlighted the richness of Hispanic traditions through music, dance and community connection, leaving attendees with a deeper appreciation of cultural pride. Stories, laughter and shared experiences created a warm atmosphere that emphasized the importance of honoring heritage in everyday life. The event concluded with a strong sense of unity and joy, showing how culture continues to inspire people of all backgrounds.
“I get to show my heritage from the food, music and dance. It’s part of who I am, not just my heritage but my characteristics. It’s what makes me, me. Everyone’s culture is beautiful and together we are a strong, united community,” senior Karen Guzman said.

Hispanic artwork carries centuries of tradition, blending indigenous roots with European and modern influences to create pieces rich with meaning and depth. Artists such as Frida Kahlo create pieces that reflect emotional duality, love, pain, colonial influence and native roots. Each design tells a story, reflecting the resilience, spirituality and cultural pride of communities across generations. Traditional Hispanic artwork’s vibrant colors, intricate patterns and symbolic imagery highlight not only artistic skill but also the enduring spirit of heritage and identity. (Camila Ortiz)

The vibrant flavors of Hispanic cuisine highlight the deep connections between culture, family and tradition. Every ingredient carries a legacy, reflecting the diversity and resilience of communities across generations. Sharing these foods not only relates to nourishment but also to honoring heritage and creating lasting bonds. This dish, called caldo en su jugo, or “meat in its own juices,” showcases a traditional Mexican recipe full of rich and savory flavor; this meal comes from the state of Jalisco, Mexico. The recipe typically includes thinly sliced beef, bacon, cooked pinto beans and a rich broth made from tomatillos, cilantro, onion and jalapeno peppers.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage means honoring the languages, stories and traditions that connect generations and shape cultural identity. Teaching children their native language not only preserves these invaluable roots but also strengthens family bonds and fosters a sense of belonging. By embracing and passing down their linguistic heritage, young learners gain pride in their culture, a deeper understanding of their community’s rich history and the confidence to carry these traditions forward for generations to come.

Hispanic cultural clothing highlights a deep connection to ancestry, where fabrics, embroidery and patterns serve as living expressions of history and pride. Each garment reflects the traditions of its region, blending practicality with artistry to honor both community and identity. The poncho, a traditional garment worn in various Hispanic countries, especially in Mexico and the Andes region, commonly created from wool or other warm materials. These pieces symbolize celebration, resilience and the preservation of culture across generations.
“Hispanic clothing tells the story of who we are. Every thread carries our history, our identity, and our pride. The flowers and patterns reflect the heart of our culture. With bold colors and rich textures, we wear our heritage like a crown,” sophomore Ximena Ortiz said.

Hispanic traditions celebrate the beauty of family ties and cultural identity, with events like Quinceañeras reflecting values of love, respect and resilience. These gatherings carry stories from the past while highlighting the strength and creativity of younger generations. Through such traditions, communities keep their heritage alive and create connections that transcend time.

Camila Ortiz, a senior at NC, joined The Chant this year with a deep passion for visual art and mental health advocacy. Ortiz, from a young age, has always put passion in her work and brings a creative and empathetic voice to her community. As the oldest of four siblings and the daughter of immigrant parents, she desires to become the person her parents have wanted her to become and to be the example her siblings need. In her free time, Ortiz enjoys drawing, crafting, baking, and reading. After graduation, Ortiz hopes to pursue a career as a mental health nurse, where she hopes to combine her compassion and creativity to make a positive impact in people’s lives. This year, Ortiz is excited to have the opportunity to make an impact and follow her passions while designing for The Chant.
