January 7, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent Jonathan Ross shot and killed Renee Good, a 37-year-old white woman. The agent — involved in a similar 2025 confrontation — opened fire in the middle of Portland Avenue in Minneapolis. Her wife and kids had recently moved to Minneapolis after the death of her second husband in 2023. Homeland Security had previously notified citizens about an increase in enforcement within the Minneapolis metropolitan area. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem also stated that law enforcement officials called for bystanders to help remove their vehicle from the snow during an operation, and that Good weaponized her vehicle against the agents.
“It was an act of domestic terrorism. A woman attacked them and those surrounding them and attempted to run them over and ram them with her vehicle. An officer of ours acted quickly and defensively shot to protect himself and the people around him,” Noem said.
Videos taken by bystanders depict officers grabbing the car door handle and demanding that Good open the vehicle. As she pulled forward, a different officer fired three shots at her head. Three seconds after the initial shots, her car crashed into another car parked on Portland Avenue, and then into the snow. A woman — later identified as Good’s wife — rushed to the driver’s side while a bystander yelled “shame,” and the agent told him to call 911. Video footage later showed agents denying an onlooker — identifying himself as a physician — the ability to help her. The officers stated that their own personnel would arrive — to keep the area free from onlookers — before firefighters eventually carried Good to an ambulance seven minutes later.
“I truly feel bad for the woman who was shot, as she had three kids who now have to live without a mother. She was a poet and a guitarist. Situations like this are disturbing, evil and truly despicable. Instead of the two sides [Democrats and Republicans] using this as an opportunity to feud over their differences, America should come together and rally for change. Yet, we continue to stay silent and expect change. If society excuses this death, who knows what the future may entail. If we don’t speak up now, then when?” magnet sophomore Somto Nwankgo said.
Three hours after the shooting, Minneapolis city mayor Jacob Fryer used several expletives at a news conference. He stated that ICE needs to leave Minneapolis, and that the self-defense claim stood as an abuse of power. In contrast, President Donald Trump agreed with Noem, claiming that Good acted “disorderly” and “viciously ran over the ICE officer.” Since the incident, protests sparked all across the nation, with demonstrators demanding the abolition of ICE and calling out the Trump Administration. Netizens also share not only Good’s legacy, but the life she lived. The ICE agents shot Good less than a mile from where George Floyd was killed, where sympathizers place flowers and lead vigils for them.
