The historic 2014 Georgia Snowmageddon left myriad residents in awe of the several inches of snow that came rushing down all over Atlanta. Prompting hopes of receiving a similar icy blanket, this past weekend’s weather forecast supposedly revealed a chance of snowfall. Due to the cold front that swept through the south, the Kennesaw and Acworth communities only received about ¼ of an inch of ice, leaving various NC students disappointed.
“I was disappointed in the weather, just because we never get snow here! I have been missing it. The extra day helped me take a break from school. I needed time to catch up on sleep, friends and hobbies. I love school, but who isn’t happy for a snow day break?” senior Layla Pothier said.
After Cobb County cancelled school for Monday, January 26, students planned out their three-day weekend properly, eagerly awaiting the winter snow. Rather than experiencing a winter wonderland, various metro-Atlanta counties experienced power outages and extreme temperatures Sunday night and moving into Monday. Nearly 10,000 homes felt the impact of the outlandish weather with blackouts spreading across the metro area. In addition to the loss of power, about 1,200 travelers who planned to catch a flight in or out of the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport had their flights cancelled.
Sleet, wind and rain took the place of the longed-for snowfall this past weekend, but it allowed families to gather around the living room and take time to slow down after a busy holiday season. Students at NC slept in and napped, watched movies with their loved ones and even caught up on procrastinated schoolwork. While the winter weather did not shape up to produce a thick blanket of snow on Georgia lawns, the intense breeze kept most residents inside. The 10-15 mph of wind in Kennesaw pushed trees to the ground and left branches covering streets and nearby highways. Now, Kennesaw and Acworth residents await the frigid temperatures as they continue to drop significantly, leaving the wind to only amplify the cold.
“I spent it [the three-day weekend] hanging out with my boyfriend and working on my Advanced Placement (AP) Seminar essay because all wrestling tournaments were cancelled for the weekend. I was a little disappointed because the weather made it seem like it was going to be a huge ice storm with snow. And it was really disappointing. I mostly just watched some movies without worrying about Monday, but I still had to do seminar work and chemistry,” magnet sophomore Kyle Floyd said.
