For years, teachers have screamed at students to “put your phone away” and “pay attention in class,” but NC is leaving this mentality in the past. Instead of discouraging students from making use of their $1,000 iPhones, they are finally learning to embrace them. By introducing an all-new class titled AP Social Media, students will study all types of social media, such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and more.
“As a senior, I’m so mad I won’t be able to take this class! I’m literally famous on TikTok, and I would have so much fun in the class. I spend so much time on social media I could probably teach the class myself. Either way, NC is finally waking up and realizing that we obviously need more screen time than we already have,” senior Lester Moconoghue said.
While these three social media platforms will be the base of the curriculum, students will have the amazing opportunity to study other, jankier platforms such as X (formerly named Twitter) and Facebook. Despite these apps being catered to the elderly (aged 22+), this variety will give students a wide range of experience using these apps. The inspiration for this new class was the increasing screen time and addiction to phones that high schoolers seem to be developing. Instead of fighting this, NC will be the first high school to lead the way in increasing social media usage and brainrot mastery through this class.
“I can’t wait for this class, I’m so excited to see what it has to offer. I really hope we study the rise of Italian brain rot. Everyone always says that this kinda stuff rots your brain or makes you lose brain cells, but I genuinely think brainrot helps me to understand life better. TikTok as a whole has changed my life for the better, and being offered a class like AP social media is such a great opportunity,” freshman Chloe Kirk said.
The dichotomy of AP Social Media versus other classes lies in the assignments, tests and quizzes of this class. The innovative and necessary class will encourage a minimum of 24 hours of phone usage and screen time, which is just what the young minds of NC need. To enforce this, teachers will do a mandatory screen time and app usage check at the end of the week for summative grades. Additionally, class assignments will require students to post consistently, follow trends, and engage with brainrot, new slang and more. Units will include topics such as “How not to Flop” and “TikTok Sound Theory,” ensuring that students are set up for success. With complex units such as these, students will be tested on their ability to implement what they learn to their personal online personas, where they are graded on different following and like count milestones.
As NC moves forward with this initiative, the administration hopes to lead the way for other schools. Classes like these are important to keep students engaged and in touch with modern times. AP Social Media uses things that students already do, such as doom scrolling and consuming brainrot and turns it into a learning opportunity. This class is exactly what NC needs and offers an amazing opportunity for the entire student body.
