As reporters continue to clamor for an interview with the now-famed Daryush Valizadeh (known as Roosh V), known for his controversial opinion where he advocates for rape’s legalization, fear grows among girls and women around the world. Roosh V and his followers planned mass neomasculanist meetings in 43 countries around the world, yet, due to public outcry against their agenda, were forced to cancel in fear of their safety—a fear every female felt and feels as Roosh V continues to accumulate a following.

People around the world condemned the meetings and the beliefs professed by Roosh and his group after they advocated for a ban on women voting, described a woman’s value as based on her beauty and fertility, and explained that a woman with an eating disorder made for the best girlfriend. Despite this condemnation, the fear lies in the knowledge that Roosh does not exist as a lone voice in these declarations. In countries where Roosh planned to meet, authorities advised women not walk alone, just another danger to add on top of every day ones already faced.

Although Roosh V now claims that he wrote the opinion that we should legalize rape as satire, it appears unlikely in light of his other proclamations. A self-published author, Roosh V wrote books detailing how to pick up women in certain countries. The books, described as derogatory and a “rape guide,” faced large condemnment in the countries they referred to. Along with these books, Roosh V’s site, Return of the Kings, regularly discusses rape and a female’s lack of worth. While organizing the worldwide event, Roosh V’s website banned any women or homosexuals from attending, asking members to record women who attempt to “infiltrate” the meetings and send the video to Roosh V’s email “so we can tear them up.”

Even if his article did indeed exist was intended as satire (which again appears unlikely), the beliefs expressed within them still horrify and astonish, especially considering Roosh V’s following. Rape exists as a very real problem in today’s society, and an all-male group promoting the degradation of females does not lend to an air of security or humor. The world condemnation of Roosh lends a little comfort, but the knowledge that people like him exist present a very dangerous reality for us all.
