2014-2015 calendar puzzles some, motivates others for September break
August 20, 2014
Cobb County School District officially altered the 2014-15 school calendar by starting school three days earlier and adding a break in September.
“The main focus is what’s best for students and teachers,” Smyrna parent and ex-calendar committee member Lisa Miller said in an interview with The Atlanta Journal Constitution.
Despite the calendar cutting their summer short, students appreciate the fall break.
“The break is a chance to rest my brain and get back into school afterwards,” senior Janice Wheaton says.
Cobb County students found one fault in the calendar. Students angered over the calendar starting school on a Monday with a full week rather than the accustomed Wednesday with half of a week.
Senior Solomon Fortune commented, “It was horrible to start school on a Monday.”
Other students feel cutting summer short and starting on Mondays will pay off in the end.
Sophomore Kesha Perkins says, “It’s better to have more breaks and start school earlier. If you start later, you end later.”
However, Cobb County intends on changing the calendar for the 2015-16 school year by starting school on Monday August 3, adding a break in February, taking away some free days, and ending school on May 25.
