Confusion and excitement sent Mrs. Lawson’s Honors American Lit class abuzz as she gave students a project to complete—except with a twist—no clear instructions, an abstract objective, and complete silence when students asked her confused questions. Students received a manila folder of supplies to construct the purpose of the project. “We picked up a manila folder with a coat hanger, string, a stick, an index card, black construction paper, and a notecard. All we know is that we have to relate the project back to the unit: Individuals Taking a Stand,” junior Aiden Minard said. Though abstract in concept, the project pushed students past their creative boundaries. “This project delves into our creativity by making us think more creatively and to better understand the theme of this unit,” junior Patrick Moran said.

As part of the NC Anatomy class with teacher Julie Hopp, junior Spencer Williams and freshman Tatiana Sidorova examine and dissect a sheep’s heart to identify and label the different parts on a hand out. The objective? To develop a concrete understanding of the heart’s components and functions. “I learned how the heart works, and all the different paths,” Williams said.
