NC Boys’ volleyball finds its footing after falling to Harrison

In their first season since 2020, the NC boys’ volleyball program (0-6) has seen significant improvement, according to head coach Stephen Sansing. Despite a winless varsity record, the future for the new-look Warriors appears bright with several standout talents. As NC lines up the latter half of the schedule, the Warriors could use a two-week rest to round out the competition.

March 28, NC varsity boys’ volleyball (0-6) squared off at Harrison High School to face the rival Hoyas (2-2) for the second time this season. The JV team (1-5) played on a court adjacent to the varsity matchup. The Warriors, nearly halfway into the first boys’ season since 2019, have struggled to catch their footing among opponents who have polished their programs for the greater part of the last decade. Head coach Stephen Sansing helped reinstall this year as the program stalled after the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the 2020 season opener. 

“We were actually supposed to have our first game the day that COVID shut us down, so we never played. The next year, the school wouldn’t let us have a team, because of COVID. Then all the guys graduated, and we didn’t have any players left. It’s now been four years… It’s not necessarily the first-ever team, but for these guys, it might as well be,” Sansing said.

Sansing, the 2024 state champion coach of the girls’ volleyball team, noted drastic improvements in both varsity and JV performances. He refers to the two teams as orange and navy, rather than varsity and JV, to pay respect to the rather equal level of talent within both teams.

The first set for the orange squad opened up with a 13-2 run by the Hoyas, pinning the Warriors in a hole. After two strikes from Harrison landed out of bounds, the Warriors looked to capitalize on the momentum. A long rally unfortunately ended with another Hoyas score, and NC would only tack on two more points in the 25-6 first set.

The Navy team, however, managed to put on a fight, sharing points during a 9-11 campaign with Harrison up by two. Junior blocker Jaiden Nichols (5) led on both ends for the Warriors with two blocks and three consecutive kills to patch on the Warriors’ 14th point in the set. The Hoyas maintained their lead and finished the set 25-16.

After a quick two points from Harrison to open up set two, the Warriors’ orange sophomore blocker Collin Thompson (27) came up with an electric block and followed it up by hammering a kill into Hoya territory. The opponents traded scores until Thompson tied the match 6-6 with another block. Harrison answered with a 9-2 run. Senior libero Diego Carreras (9) managed a dig to pull the Warriors back in the game and set up a kill by Thompson. 

The Navy Warriors’ matchup started with another block and kill by Nichols, which fired up the NC bench. Despite the team’s strong defensive effort, Harrison scored eleven early points to NC’s three. Benefitted by intense and fast-paced rallies, the Hoyas managed to fend off the Warriors, winning set two. Both NC teams lost their matches 0-2, but Sansing highlighted key improvements he witnessed against Harrison.

“We are new, but we have really improved a lot, even from the first game of the season. I love the fact that they give great effort, they want to learn and they want to get better. We did pretty good on long rallies, but it’s the ones where the first serve beats us that we have to do better,” Sansing said.

With two weeks rest, The Warriors face off next against the Allatoona Buccaneers (6-0) Thursday, April 11 at Allatoona.

NC swimmers attended their first swim meet of the season at Mountain View Aquatic Center. The meet took place over two days — Friday, November 1 for time trials and Saturday, November 2 for relays. Although the meet only served as a preliminary event for the rest of the season, swimmers worked diligently to beat their times from the previous year and set new personal records.

The exciting Lady Warriors varsity volleyball (32-15) October 19 game determined who moved on to face West Forsyth High School October 22. Entering the game, the arena echoed with cheers of support from the NC community. Through three heated sets, NC pushed through and earned the whopping scores of 25-10, 25-8 and 25-14, winning all three sets.

After a thrilling win against the Marietta Blue Devils (1-7) the night before homecoming, the NC varsity football team took the field at Cherokee High School. With energized supporters in the stands, the team brought home another win, contributing to their perfect record. Following their fight against the Cherokee Warriors (4-5), the team will move on to their next game against the Etowah High School Eagles (2-6), October 25.

The NC Warriors varsity football team (7-0) entered the playing field October 11 with the autumn sun setting around them and the NC community cheering them on from the stands. The student section, shining with excitement, continued its eager support for the team through each quarter, encouraging the players to a 38-22 win. This homecoming game continued the Warriors’ winning streak as they look forward to a matchup away from home October 18 against the Cherokee Warriors (4-4).

The NC varsity softball team honored their seniors during their game against Chapel Hill High School. The team played their hardest for the class of 2025, ending the game early with a mercy rule. A ceremony took place after the game to honor these girls and send them off with a proper goodbye.

Nathaniel Jordan, a senior magnet student and cadet in NC’s NJROTC program,  begins his first year on the school newspaper. Jordan's deep passion for writing and research led him to his aspirations of journalism as a future career path. Outside the classroom, Jordan has played for NC’s baseball team, participated on three competitive teams in JROTC and is employed as a head instructor at Choi Kwang Do martial arts. His creative mind extends his wide range of talents into painting, skateboarding and photography. Jordan consistently constructs compelling and thought-provoking poems and is currently working on his first poetry book poetry. Jordan volunteers every Sunday at his church working in the daycare, and strives to be active in school and in his community. With his strenuous efforts to demonstrate great leadership, Jordan attained positions as assistant operations officer, platoon commander, and class leader in JROTC. Jordan also served as a magnet ambassador. Jordan’s goals on The Chant are to grow the NC community and to bring knowledge to social events, breaking news and spreading his passion and knowledge to all readers. Reaching the tail end of his high school career, Jordan hopes his variety of articles on The Chant can help grow the spirit of Warrior Nation, and ensure that nobody is uninformed.
