From March 26-29, NC golf received the opportunity to play at the Houston Open. The Professional Golfer’s Association (PGA) stopped during the tour and offered high school teams like NC an opportunity to compete for cash prizes up to $10 million. The Warriors’ strong showing landed them in 12th place in the field of 145 other teams. The match included surprises from pro golf players and unforgettable moments.
The tour kicked off with the professional PGA players playing the first four holes; following that, the NC golf team started the round with junior Billy Bob getting a hole-in-one. The amazing shot had ESPN analysts going wild on the broadcast. The rest of the golf team later went on to finish the round with a -4. The third-place finish was very impressive for the spunky Warrior team, looking to make a statement.
“I was super excited to play on the PGA Tour. The energy was crazy, and I could hardly believe that the crowd was like cheering for us and stuff. I truly have no clue how the school was able to pull this off because I know it cost a lot of money. That isn’t my issue, though. I am just going to stay focused on the next hole,” Bob said.
The round ended with other schools going shot-for-shot on the hole. Most impressively, NC senior James Brown was last to swing, getting yet another hole-in-one. The team went wild, and the whole crowd was going crazy. Then, Tiger Woods came out of the crowd to congratulate the team for their efforts while walking to the next hole. The team was so excited to see Woods, and one player even passed out, having to be carted off the course.
“Seeing Tiger Woods was absolutely insane. He is like the best player of all time, but just in terms of golf; otherwise, I really don’t look up to him. I am very proud of the effort that our team had today, and I look forward to competing later on in the day because this is a really large course. Golf is such a cool sport to play on a course like this,” senior Devyana Pottfield said.
Following the moment with Woods, the golf team went to the second hole to continue their event. They struggled on the second hole, finishing a plus 2 after the round and falling to 50th in the match. All of the following holes ended positively for the Warriors, shining moments included multiple birdies and star Bob managing to get a hole-in-two after the ball on his first swing landed in the sand. The impressive finish for the Warriors proved their excellence on a national level. The ability the Warriors had to compete with not only top high schools, but also other pro golf players was truly remarkable. Following the end of the game, the PGA charted the team’s flight back to NC.
