After years in a competitive region, the NC Warriors cross-country teams entered new territory (5-AAAAAA). The varsity and JV Lady Warriors beat the Kennesaw Mountain Mustangs and Cherokee Warriors during their race on September 10. They lost to the Parkview Patriots which placed first in the girls varsity race and the Wesleyan Wolves which placed first in the JV race. Placing second in the Cherokee Classic race on September 3, the Warriors plan to work hard to qualify for the state championship on November 4 and 5 in Carrollton, Georgia.

A new batch of talented underclassmen will quickly fill the shoes left behind by the graduating class. These runners include freshmen runners William Hein and AJ Shinault, a few of the talented individuals that will fight to the top for NC. “I was aiming for 20, but I didn’t hit it. 19, 18, 17, 16, those are my goals in the coming years,” Hein said.

Magnet senior Bentley Huff runs his race, competing against other runners in the fastest boys time bracket. As a fourth year runner, Huff witnessed the team’s evolution over the years. “I definitely think the culture is a little different, because my first two seasons we were in a different region and we were always in state contention. Last season was a wake up call, because we got put in a much harder region, so last season was kind of rough on all of us and we kind of all went into a bad mentality, but I think this season is definitely better and we at least have a chance,” Huff said.

Small children participate in a 1K fun run around the football field. NC’s cross country team cheers and guides them as the children run two laps around the track, offering them a chance to compete in a race of their own and experience the feeling of sprinting across the finish. “Running the 1K with the little kids was really great. You get a chance to inspire them and get them to be the best they can be,” junior runner Xavier Fabian said.

12th annual Warrior Way 5K welcomes the fall

Parent volunteers deliver anxious students their kits for the Warrior Way 5K on Saturday, September 21. The students will kick off the race at 7:30 a.m. beginning the race on a well-marked trail. “Expect a well-marked trail full of exciting turns and hills,” said their advertisements. The race also offers the option of a virtual runner these individuals will not run in the race but will receive the cool T-shirt.

Tensions ran high as students anxiously watch the cross country team compete against the football players in a game of tug a war. Senior Jayden Walker used every muscle in his body to pull the rope, and despite their diligence, the football players ultimately lost to the girls’ cross country team. Perhaps it helped that Coaches Tener, Rainey, and finally, Queen were working against their own players to the delight of the roaring crowd.

Boys Varsity showed great diligence and heart through fierce competition, and hundreds of fans watching. “It looks like we have some really good runners especially on our Varsity team, so I hope we can make state this year,” Sophomore JV runner Lewis Wheaton said.
