Senior edge rusher Joshua Josephs will continue to rep orange as he announced his commitment to the University of Tennessee via social media on Monday, November 22. Rated as a 4-star prospect on 24/7 Sports, Josephs’ ability to play any defensive position at the high school level showed college scouts the intangibles he possesses. After receiving offers and showing interest in Michigan, Kentucky, and the University of Central Florida, Josephs ultimately chose the Vols and became their 14th commitment for the class of 2022.

“I was talking with close family members and friends, and we all thought Tennessee was a good fit for me. I felt like a high priority. I could tell by how they connected with me that they thought I was a top priority,” Josephs said.

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound defensive standout tallied 104 tackles and six sacks as he led a Warrior defense that allowed only 17.5 points per game throughout the 2021 season. In addition, Josephs helped the Warriors earn back-to-back region championships for the first time in NC history, drawing attention from all over the country. Josephs collected 26 additional offers, including Michigan, Penn State, Auburn, Florida State, Georgia Tech, and Kentucky to name a few.

Originally, Josephs took official visits to Penn State and Michigan in June, along with an unofficial visit to Kentucky. Josephs noted that he almost committed to a few schools earlier in the year, but refrained from making a final decision. Ultimately, after taking his third visit to Tennessee in October, Josephs knew Knoxville felt like home.

“I just felt like me and the coaches clicked well. The game plan they have for me when I get up there is amazing. Plus, I’ve been talking with other recruits and connecting with them heavily. It’s been good,” Josephs said.

The Tennesse Volunteers, located in Knoxville, Tennessee, play in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and so far collected a 7-5 record this season. Ranked as the 70th defense in the nation while allowing 153.2 yards per game, the Volunteers could utilize Joseph’s length and stature on defense. Led by head coach Josh Heupel, the Vols earned the 22nd ranked recruiting class for 2022 in the nation. Despite different positions, Josephs committed to Tennessee like former Marietta quarterback Harrison Bailey did in 2019. Josephs could contribute greatly over the next four years.

“I just have to grind now. During the spring I’ll be working on getting stronger and more explosive. Just really my whole game overall. Like my speed and strength,” Josephs said.

Though NC ended their 2021 season in a disappointing fashion, Josephs lifted his spirits by committing to the Vols three days after his senior season came to an end. Josephs plans to enroll at Tennessee in the spring and prepare for next fall.

“His best football is still in front of him. He’s one of the most dynamic kids I’ve ever coached. His length—he’s got this incredible wingspan and he’s got this great ability to get off blocks and make plays. You can do anything you want with him,” NC defensive coordinator Mitch Henghold said.
