Basketball season openers provide mixed results
Boys
The boys varsity basketball team started off slow in their season-opener, losing 50-42 to the Kell Longhorns.
The Warriors dug themselves into a hole that proved too deep to dig out of as they trailed 9-0 at the end of the first quarter.
NC came back to tie the game in the third, but Kell’s Brian Thomas responded just seconds later with a thunderous “and-1” dunk to put the Longhorns ahead for good. The Warriors kept it close in the fourth quarter, but never led.
With the team desperate for offense, senior guard Bryce Folson stepped up off the bench, connecting on three three-pointers and added a layup to score a team-high 11 points.
“I was just trying to get the team back in it. None of us were shooting well in the first quarter so I had to come off the bench and contribute as much as I could,” Folson said.
NC will look to earn a critical first victory as they travel to Jefferson High School on Saturday to take part in a tournament.
Girls
The Lady Warriors needed overtime to defeat the Lady Longhorns 57-51 in a finish that came down to the wire.
Trailing by double-digits with just over three minutes remaining, Kell scored the last 10 points of regulation to complete the comeback and tie the game at 43-43. A Lady Warrior buzzer-beating layup attempt rolled off the rim, but NC outscored Kell 14-8 in overtime to claim the victory in the season opener.
Senior forward Alexis Luster lead the team with 21 points.
