During the 2010s, the NC Warriors garnered a plethora of success in all sports. Competing in the GA 7A conference and a tough region, the Warriors appeared in several state championships and region championships. Atop the list featured the 2014 girl’s volleyball team winning the state championship, and many other successful teams. Mixed with high caliber student-athletes and strong coaching staff, NC developed a rich athletic history over the course of the decade.

“The teachers also got into the game; it was great to see everyone getting along,” junior Yamile Farias said. Teachers and students rarely get to interact with one another outside of a classroom environment, and the basketball game at Friday’sprovided NC teachers and students to interact. Everyone enjoyed the pep rally to boost the warrior spirit at NC.

Sophomore forward Alex Acosta lines up for a free throw after a personal foul by the Hawk’s defense. Though a physical game, the Warrior frontcourt proved dominant, slightly outrebounding the Hawks. Seniors Justin Coleman and Freddy Wood contributed significant numbers in a resounding 50-37 win. “Our team just looked like we wanted it more,” Magnet sophomore Lawrence Kimani said.

On January 26th, an unfortunate tragedy occurred. Legendary Lakers player, Kobe Bryant, and his daughter, Gianna Maria-Onore Bryant, passed away due to a helicopter crash. A pivotal moment for basketball history leaves young inspired players in mourning to remember the great legacy Bryant left behind.

The death of 41-year old Kobe Bryant and his 13-year old daughter Gianna shocked the world upon hearing the news breaking Sunday afternoon. The two died along with seven others in a helicopter crash Sunday morning where none survived. Bryant left behind an influential mark, not only in the sports world but in the lives of fans, engaging in philanthropy and helping others throughout his life. Fans and celebrities continue to mourn the loss of a legend.

NC students gathered in the arena to celebrate Hoopcoming; an event that included a fun teachers versus students basketball game and performances from NC’s Varsity basketball cheerleaders. Students showed loads of excitement as they supported the basketball team, swim team and wrestling team. The event wrapped with a performance from NC’s step team and students went home hyped for the game.

The Varsity Basketball teams for McEachern and NC line. The two teams faced off this past Friday, December 13 in a home game, which lasted from 6:00 to 7:30. Though the Warriors put up a good fight, they lost the game 57-54 after a short stint in overtime; their next game will take place this upcoming December 18 against Marietta.

Prior to tipoff, NC varsity players Alex Acosta, Tyler Gorsuch and Sean Haliburton warm-up to prepare for the top-ranked Indians. Despite a trio of three-pointers from Gorsuch, the Warriors ultimately fell 79-66. The Warriors hope to get back on track with a win over the Marietta Blue Devils on Tuesday, December 17.

NC senior Azonya Austin signed with Alabama A&M on November 13, at a ceremony in the arena, surrounded by family, friends, and supporters. After playing NC basketball for the entirety of her career, Austin prepares for the transition from high school to college and reflects on what high school ball taught her. “It’s going to be a whole different atmosphere. College [basketball] is ten times harder than high school [basketball]. In high school, you just go to school go to practice and go home… [in college] my whole day will revolve around basketball, and on top of that, I have to be a student-athlete.”

NC’s Warrior basketball teams dressed to impress to commemorate their second home game. The boys eagerly await to play their hearts out tonight as they battle against the Cherokee Highschool Warriors. The JV basketball team starts the festivities with their match starting at four thirty. Varsity follows at seven thirty; both teams hope to see as many familiar faces in the stands as possible to encourage them to defeat their nemesis on the court. “The thrill of sharing the court with my teammates is something I look forward to every game day,” sophomore Alex Acosta said.

The 2019-2020 Warrior Varsity basketball team faces off against the top 5A state-ranked Kell Longhorns, building plenty of hype surrounding the basketball season. Pictured with players from both teams, this annual matchup featured top-ranked Kell guard Scoota Henderson and former NC guard Jaylen Harris, who later transferred to Kell, battling it out with NC’s prosperous team. “Now that football season is over, I am excited for basketball season. They are going to have a great year,” sophomore soccer player Kenna Armitage said.
