NC magnet plans its next trip “out-of-this-world”
March 31, 2017
On Wednesday, James Auld, AP Human Geography teacher and Magnet adviser, announced to the Magnet program that the 2020 summer trip will visit the moon and Mars. The class of the 2020 and 2021 may attend the “out-of-this-world” experience and vacation for 15 days.
“We are thrilled to have this once in a lifetime opportunity for our students. NC Magnet does include elements of STEM, so being able to learn about astronomy and physics in space is fantastic,” Auld said.
NC and NASA will work together to ensure the safe space travel of students and chaperones alike. At least three times a week for nine months before the trip, the space voyagers will endure astronomical training such as the KC-135 which allows people to feel weightless, the precision air-bearing floor, allowing trainees to move objects in space, and the space vehicle mock-up facility which allows students to learn how their experiences will feel like in a simulation.
“Hearing about this trip makes me want to fail high school four times. Imagine the college essays I could write!” freshman Venus Star said.
Students who decide to go on the trip must take extra classes such as astronomy, rocket science, stress and anxiety management, and astrophysics.
“I’m so jealous the future magnet students get to go to space. I really want to be an astrophysicist and going to the moon and Mars would have been an amazing opportunity,” sophomore Sunny Moone said.
