Magnet senior Mya Conner will begin her post-high school career at the Georgia Institute of Technology, an esteemed school that fosters inspiration for students involved in the STEM industry. With a plan to major in the neuroscience field, Conner hopes to change the world by analyzing the inner workings of ones mind. As an altruistic, eager and determined friend and student, Conner undoubtedly faces a bright future as one of Georgia Tech’s latest Yellowjackets.

After a whopping 17 years of operation, the North Cobb Magnet program for international studies will discontinue new students for the 2027 cohort. A multitude of different factors has circled for the reasoning behind ending the program, including financial struggles under superintendent Chris Ragsdale, severe mental health issues of students involved and the potential of disadvantaging high achieving non-magnet students’ post-secondary school opportunities.

The International Extravaganza makes a groundbreaking return after a cancellation due to the pandemic in 2020. The evening event, hosted in NC’s cafeteria, provided students, parents, administration and the community with an enjoyable experience. Participants left with full stomachs and satisfied minds following presentations by Awtrey and Barber middle school students, who educated listeners with the cultures, traditions and customs of over 40 countries.

Student led group, Warriors of the World, promotes diversity and inclusion within the NC student body. Their initiative allows students to share their favorite aspects of their culture with others and further educate students on a plethora of ethnic backgrounds. A member from the group interviews a chosen student, where they will then highlight, and showcase their culture and ethnic background.

Accepted magnet students from public and private schools across the state attended the Magnet Spring Showcase. These bright students sampled NC’s activity offerings and learned about their future high school experience through presentations by NC representatives and a tour around the school after viewing different clubs and teams. NC aims to recruit the best of the bunch with promises of a unique experience for each and every new Warrior.

The magnet program provides magnet students with an open lounge where students can work, eat lunch, and host meetings before and after school. Both James Auld, the magnet coordinator, and Leasa Bonilla, the magnet clerk, provide the students with an abundance of resources so that they can achieve all their goals. “I chose NC as it provided better opportunities for me as compared to my districted high school. I feel like I have achieved more through the magnet program as opposed to staying in my district. There was also more for me to be involved in at NC, like the clubs, games and people,” senior magnet student Allison Castaneda said.

The annual Magnet Convocation took place Saturday, May 22 in the NC Arena. Seniors enjoyed an intimate gathering with family, friends, and the NC Magnet family as their time as an NC Magnet student came to a close. Speakers shared words of wisdom, students expressed magnitudes of gratitude, and all reflected on the last four years at NC.

Magnet senior Jacqueline Ortiz delivers her research presentation, titled “Vaping versus Cigarette Smoking: Generational Perspectives.” After years of focused instruction, these seniors used their developed researching skills to study a modern topic of their choosing. Using collected data and graphs to visually represent their information, all the presentations featured a minimum 12-minute discussion and post questioning.

The panelists took their seats on stage as the students eagerly sat down to learn about their lives and immigration experiences. All of the panelists shared their stories with the students, discussing how they became active members in their communities. The diversity of the group truly demonstrated how anyone can become a member of the American community.

Magnet senior Ana Barahona started the Global Education Outreach club (GEO) in an effort to help children in developing countries. As her first project, she set out to collect gently used clothing to bring to Honduras. Barahona hopes to make a difference in their communities. “I feel a deep connection to GEO because it started from a personal project of mine. I decided about two months ago that I want to celebrate my 18th birthday in a different way after I saw a family friend do so. I wanted to give back,” Barahona said.
