The CW’s hit TV series Riverdale premiered the first episode of its third season on Wednesday, October 10. Based on the characters from the Archie Comics, written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the American teen drama takes place in the dark town of Riverdale, where Archie and his friends struggle to solve their town’s mysteries to keep their loved ones together.

Riverdale kicked off their first season with positive reviews and hype from the viewers. However, after the release of season two, the show lost a handful of fans due to complaints of a boring storyline.  For those who still watch the show, the last episode’s cliffhanger from the season two finale still managed to leave the audience stunned with Archie Andrews’ arrest for a murder he did not commit.

“Season two was not their best work, but after that cliffhanger in the last episode, I’m really hoping the writers are going to make it up to us and start the third season with a better written plot,” junior Juliana Charles said.

Season 3-episode 1: “Labor Day,” started with the murder trial accusing Andrews, who pleaded guilty and in consequence served two years of juvenile detention. Andrews’ love interest Veronica Lodge then cuts ties with her father after she realizes he set Andrews up to serve jail time. The writers of this episode perfectly depicted the perspectives of the main characters of the show with the problems they face. For example, Jughead Jones struggles to keep the leader position of his Serpent gang to fight against their rivals, the Ghoulies. Meanwhile, towards the end of the episode, Jughead’s girlfriend Betty Cooper deals with her own family issues and tries to find her true self. This episode also ends with a cliffhanger where Cooper dropped to the ground in a seizure after she sees her mother and sister performing a strange ritual in the backyard.

Riverdale’s writers wanted to make season three different from all the previous seasons by introducing a new supernatural character called the Gargoyle King. Hypothetically, viewers of this season could possibly see a Sabrina the Teenage Witch crossover with one of the episodes, a plan that the writers want to make happen.

“I thought it was really interesting how they brought in the Gargoyle King. I’m looking forward to how they’re going to put a supernatural character theme into the show, something they haven’t done before,” junior Miku Fawcett said.

For those who enjoyed watching shows like Pretty Little Liars or Gossip Girl, grab some popcorn and prepare for the roller coaster ride. Tune in to the drama every Wednesday night at 8 p.m. on CW.
