March 2026 rolled in with a brand new single from Malcolm Todd, a relatively new young artist who specializes in a blend of bedroom pop and alternative R&B. Importantly, it’s not the content we put out or the popcorn we eat that makes this publication so special; it’s the people. We love each and every one of you so, so much!
A dedication from the duo
While fans of classic rock and other 20th-century genres closely tie protest music to the 1960s, the reality of the theme in music extends far beyond the hippie movement. In the 21st century, fans of genres from hip-hop to folk and every style in between can listen to the voices of their favorite artists rebelling against the societal norm. This rebellion signals an individual protest, which prompts rallying cries from everyone tuned in on the radio.
From the 2000s to the 2020s: The albums that defined American rebellion
Since the dawn of time, new generations have pushed art, society, culture and politics forward with each action they took. Though these habits merged and intersected in a multitude of ways before the 1960s, the hippie movement allowed teenage culture to become undoubtedly based upon rebellion and the creative enterprises that facilitated that mobilization. As NC students pack their school bags for the upcoming semester, they ponder what they will need and what will keep their backpacks from growing too heavy. Their freshly received syllabi guide their rampages through the back-to-school sections of department stores and office supply shops. As teachers might observe, the unique way each individual approaches the task reflects part of his or her academic identity.

In the late nights of early summer, Advanced Placement (AP) students feverishly work through material in caffeine-fueled frenzies. Though the stress associated with AP studying rarely enthuses high schoolers, the joy of finding the perfect coffee to accompany it remains. This order may just reveal the student’s success.

In a flash of 7-year-old creativity, a young Rosalyn Schwanke wrote the first piece she felt truly proud of. In a dotted and lined notebook, with space at the top of each page for a crayon drawing, an undefeatable argument played out–the tooth fairy works harder than Santa Claus–and the writing fair judges agreed. With this newfound critical acclaim under her belt, she realized her love for writing. As a current NC senior, Rosalyn adores The Chant both as a creative outlet and an escape. She hopes to utilize her time as Editor-in-Chief to help other aspiring writers reach a new level of skill while she continues to research topics she loves. When she’s not at her keyboard, Rosalyn can be found thrifting, playing her bass, creating art or listening to a vintage record.
