Divine Idiku, a new member of The Chant, is a Junior at NC. She joined the Newspaper to experience the journalism field and see if she wants to pursue it in the future. Idiku enjoys writing her thoughts and feelings and hopes to improve it further in the future.

She enjoys watching anime and K-dramas during her free time. She has a passion for running and is part of the cross country team for NC. She is also part of the Beta club and loves contributing to her community. During this school year, Idiku hopes to improve her writing skills and explore the journalism field. She is still finding her path and what field she wishes to pursue in the future, but hopes she can decide this school year.

The mentally ill face numerous challenges in life; although several mental illnesses tie into criminal acts, not all do. The media, criminal justice system and health system tend to handle the mentally ill in a negative way. Schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and antisocial disorder hold a high number of violent and sexual crimes. However, if treated properly, they hold a lower chance of committing such heinous crimes.

Politics have continued to dribble down into education in Florida; governor DeSantis now possesses a say in what students can and cannot read. Schools and counties banned several books in Florida, all for the sole purpose of enacting the law passed by Florida governor Ron DeSantis. The people, on the other hand, create different ways to distribute those banned books to the students to read.

As the last member to release her own single and debut as a soloist from the group Blackpink, fans held high hopes and anticipations for Jisoo’s album. She debuted a year and a half later after the popular songs “Lalisa” and “Money” released by her fellow member Lisa, and fans’ expectations soared beyond her reach. Unfortunately, “ME,” dropped March 31, 2023, disappointed. She has, however, released an album that fits her image and distinct voice.

The NC JV girls (1-0) fought aggressively for the ball and stayed strong throughout the game. They persevered, despite the score on the board discouraging them. The girls made sure to stay on the players and communicated with one another, unfortunately, the Lady Warriors lost the game 3-0. NC left with high hopes and determination for the next game against Osborne High School (1-0-1).

Either by setting up broad unattainable goals or not making a plan on how they will reach their goal, people can inadvertently set up their new year to nearly flop. Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsed from a sudden cardiac arrest after making a tackle during Monday’s night football against the Cincinnati Bengals. The first responders administered CPR, with his heartbeat fortunately returning. They immediately rushed him to the Cincinnati Medical hospital, where fans gathered to show their support. This incident sheds light on the dangers surrounding football that nobody believes or wants to see, particularly the damage that stars take onto their bodies. This realization could ultimately revolutionize the lens in which American football fans view their favorite hobby.

The sports industry continues to decline due to numerous negative reasons like questionable coaching and extreme pressures placed on athletes. Popular sporting events, such as the Super Bowl, consistently diminish in viewership, with 96.4 million last year compared to the year before with 100.45 million viewers. On the contrary, the 2021 League of Legends World Championship in Iceland garnered 76.3 million viewers.

Season one of “Fate: The Winx Saga” sold well in 2020, but season two did not receive great reviews. The casting of the actors does not meet the criteria of the fans and they added numerous new characters. They distributed the scenes unevenly, shedding light only on Bloom, the flame fairy character. They overshadowed the rest of the characters, leaving fans with multiple questions.

The State Department of Health put the majority of Jackson, Mississippi on boiling water notice on July 29, due to the high cloudy water levels coming from the old water plant. In late August, the Pearl river flooded and damaged the largest water plant in Jackson. The government overlooked the old water plant, which needed fixing prior to the incident, but never happened. The town desperately needs addressing due to its high crime and old and damaged infrastructure.

After years in a competitive region, the NC Warriors cross-country teams entered new territory (5-AAAAAA). The varsity and JV Lady Warriors beat the Kennesaw Mountain Mustangs and Cherokee Warriors during their race on September 10. They lost to the Parkview Patriots which placed first in the girls' varsity race and the Wesleyan Wolves which placed first in the JV race. Placing second in the Cherokee Classic race on September 3, the Warriors plan to work hard to qualify for the state championship on November 4 and 5 in Carrollton, Georgia.

The SAT/ACT should determine, among other factors, a student’s eligibility to enter college. However, this can only work if they design the exam fairly and if everyone can take the exam. Sat/ACT should not determine one’s own eligibility to enter college; extracurriculars, GPA and grade should determine it. “Yes, I think it should be optional, it should be a facet that colleges look for, it could be a piece of who a student is overall. It definitely should not be the only piece that should be looked at, for a very long time it has been GPA and SAT score and if you didn’t have them, then you couldn’t get in. I like the idea that it is a piece so if a kid does well they could add it to their portfolio,” SAT/ACT proctor Jennifer Morgan said.
