Nationally recognized as a holiday, MLK day serves to honor and respect Martin Luther King as a leader and overall person. While the world receives the day off, they should use it as a day to involve themselves in their community and make it a better place. These acts of service not only aid the community, but they certainly commemorate King and his impact on the world that everyone knows and loves.

97 years after Albert C. Olney and Frank C. Vincent founded the original Key Club International organization, NC finally decided to invite a Key Club into their school. They plan to collaborate with other Key Clubs in the area and do their best to support their community. NC encourages students of all grades to join and easily gain volunteer hours while learning multiple positive characteristics along the way.

NC’s new club Girls Who Code hosted a “Snuggle Drive” for homeless people and gathered blankets, socks, jacket, and other warm winter items to donate. To everyone’s dismay, the drive ended with only four homerooms participating. Devastated, the club will regretfully host a promised doughnut party for the first period with the most items. “I just find it really disgusting that people will take time out of their day to stand in line for $300 shoes, or the new iPhone, but they will not use their time to go to Goodwill and buy a $10 blanket or socks for homeless people who have the bare minimum. It takes a celebrity to donate for anyone to do anything,” junior Zoe Brown said.

NC’s chapter of National Honor Society (NHS) kicked off their second meeting of the year by showing off their blue club t-shirts. The club meets on the first Friday morning of every month and participate in monthly service projects around the community. In September and October, members will assist Horizon Baseball at Kennworth Park to play ball with special needs members in the community. “We’ll rotate about 12 games where we go and help them out, and then next month we’re going to do a clean-up with them,” NHS sponsor Mrs. Tippens said.

At the Lake City Animal Hospital, these students surround the shelter dog, Pickles, as they take turns petting him. Pickles steals the hearts of many as he jumps around giving kisses to his new friends. Interacting and socializing with the dogs at the shelter brings smiles and joy to both the dogs and the students.

Heart to Heart created and designed multiple jars for a coin drive to help the CASANA foundation. “We were excited about the first creation of the jars because next week we hope to raise a lot of money for the organization with our customized jars that will hopefully urge people to donate,” sponsor Mrs. Theaker said.
