November 4, the NC marching band (NCMB) performed their 2023 program, “Monarch,” for the final time this competition season. The band placed second in Open Class and received several other accolades such as first place drum majors, first place color guard and second place percussion for the open classification. Although the NCMB experienced various challenges and changes throughout their season, they ended their run with an unforgettable performance fit for any king or queen.

The NC marching band participated in the Bands of America Orlando Regional competition Saturday, October 22. The band performed their show, “Kokopelli Dances,” for an eager audience of judges, family members and other bands from around the region. After a chaotic two years, the senior class of 2022 finally reunited in person for their final year of high school. The students will all look back on their high school years fondly and reminisce on the great memories that NC provided. “One of my favorite memories from school is having classroom debates and discussions with some of my favorite teachers. I loved hearing everyones opinions and being able to make connections with other students,” senior Maddy Nomura said.

Marching band provides satisfactory exercise and serves as a healthy activity for high school students. Marching with no instruments can focus on strict exercise and production, rather than the sounds of the music. “I feel like I would be more healthy and strong if I’m totally focusing on my physical exercise rather than focusing on how good my playing sounds. I think the rest of the band would appreciate the harsh exercise to help us be more fit,” freshman Victor Aguilar said.

The marching and color guard performed excellently Saturday, October 23. Both the marching band and color guard worked their best to receive awards and victories. Color guard’s mesmerizing blue uniforms and stunning dances emphasized the bands music as they all stood out to the crowd proudly representing NC. With the victorious fifth-place final win, the marching band prepares for their next competition in North Georgia.

Junior Emma Klein’s love for music and others manifests itself outside the confines of the band room. Those who know her appreciate her upbeat approach to her life and interactions with others. “[Emma] is a bundle of energy and positivity. She’s incredibly easy to talk to and gets along with everyone. I recently discovered her music covers on Instagram and they’re wonderful. There’s nothing she can’t do,” senior Ellie Boyle said.

Although numerous differences presented themselves this senior night compared to others, students still experienced their last days with people who love them and recognized them because of the amazing commitment they put forth. Marchers will no longer be seen in their uniforms when attending games; instead they wear khakis and a blue, dry fit t-shirt. “Just last year all of us were joking around and having fun, practicing for competitions and laughing in the stands at football games. Its crazy how things changed so fast,” NC sophomore Addie Quintana said.

As graduating senior Briana Rohlfs enjoys her last season as a flutist in NC’s marching band, she reflects on what it takes to pull off a successful performance. “There’s a lot of emphasis on being a part of a team because if you’re not there it ruins the whole form. Everyone depends on each other to make the show happen. Without one person the show would be completely different,” Rohlfs said.

NC Marching Band members prepare for the annual Cobb Exhibition happening later tonight. Junior Vicki Zitsch studies the schedule, as she mentally plans out how to finish all her homework before arriving to the event. “Cobb Exhibition is really cool. They split it into two days where half of the marching band performs on the first day, and the other half performs on the second day. You get to go and watch other school’s marching bands perform, and then we’re going to perform our own marching band show in front of judges who give us feedback on how we can improve,” Zitsch says.
