February 1, NC’s wrestling program hosted Sprayberry High School and Kennesaw Mountain High School in a tri-meet. The wrestling Warriors secured a victory against the opposing schools, with their overall record standing as 13-6 for the season. Following the matches, senior wrestlers Aqib Mohammad, Isabelle Welsh, Ethan Jones and manager Madelynn McAuley commemorated their time spent with the program during wrestling senior night.

With the wrestling season over, senior players including Jett Wright and Debare Omoniaye will move on from the wrestling program. Although they will no longer brandish the Warrior orange and blue colors, they believe that with some effort, the team will experience a brighter future. ”We have good coaching and solid practices so in the coming seasons, we need to just put it all together. Our upcoming senior leaders need to step it up so we can have more than five guys go to the state tourney next year,” said Omoniaye.

Wrestlers succeed at state, season ends

NC students gathered in the arena to celebrate Hoopcoming; an event that included a fun teachers versus students basketball game and performances from NC’s Varsity basketball cheerleaders. Students showed loads of excitement as they supported the basketball team, swim team and wrestling team. The event wrapped with a performance from NC’s step team and students went home hyped for the game.

NC Varsity wrestlers began their annual regions tournament held at NC. Senior Jemal Kinchen wrestles off against Marietta hoping to come through with a win to put NC in the next round. Although the Warriors did not win the tournament, the athletes and coaches left with their heads held high for next weekend’s tournament.

NC proved their skills on the mat in their first two wins. Varsity wrestler Anthony Miranda believes that in order to win a match, a wrestler must believe in themselves no matter who they face. He, along with his teammates stayed quick on their feet and continue to work hard, their eyes set on the state tournament. “You know its like a warrior against a warrior,” Miranda said.

Wrestlers train for months to prepare for state, keeping control of their weight, learning new techniques, and partaking in rigorous conditioning. Muscles over mass often defeat an opponent.
