Although Black History Month holds noble motives, the month serves as a justification to downplay history and culture into the shortest month of the year while also watering down the material presented. Society acts as if African-Americans should accept the month with a smile on their faces, but the public rarely discusses the fact that once the month ends, the country returns to a state of not acknowledging Black History or the events occurring surrounding it.

Black Student Union and NC’s Fine Arts department held a grand performance in the Performing Arts Center to commemorate Black History Month. Guest speakers made an appearance in addition to NCs chorus and symphony performing notable historical Black songs. This counts as NCs first formal black history event, drawing a considerable audience and remaining in the hearts of those who attended as a success.

NC Wind Symphony Band students practice in the PAC for tonights Black History Month Concert. “Of Our New Day Begun,” the piece played at the concert, is a memorial piece from a terrorist attack on Mother Emanuel A.M.E Church, written by black composer Omar Thomas. “The emotion and history to this piece plays a huge part in how we represent and express it when we play,” freshman Leika Badstibner said.

Wind Symphony prepares for Black History Month concert

On the first day of Black History Month, a multitude of Historically Black Colleges (HBCUs) received bomb threats, forcing several students to either evacuate their campuses or take part in a hard lockdown. After further investigation of the matter, the Federal Department of Investigation concluded that these potentially harmful threats count as racially charged.

Every February, educators at schools all over America try their best to squeeze black history lessons into their curriculum. At NC, this board placed at the front entrance of the school features a black history timeline, showcasing important African American figures like Sojourner Truth and Barack Obama. Despite this board and the 20-second black history facts shared over the intercom on the afternoon announcements, students (and perhaps adults too) still do not know about the courageous acts of countless “forgotten figures” in black history.

Myths surrounding the intellect of historic black individuals often end up diminishing their achievements, preventing them from seeing their true ability or receiving the honor they deserve. People years ago dreamed of the technological advancements that the future would bring. Without the work and extensive research done by these prominent black individuals, modern everyday life would not take the same form.

Textbooks and review books overlook the Civil Rights movement, showcasing Black achievements at its peak. As the month recognizes black advancements in various aspects, such as Jackie Robinson, as portrayed, and Brown vs. Board of Education. These accomplishments receive credit in US textbooks and represent Black culture at its peak during the Civil Rights movement in the 60s.

Black Student Union set up a board challenging students to engage and acknowledge Black History Month at NC. Students have the opportunity to shine with artistic and creative skills, representing any black leader in history to show off the month’s meaning and significance. Writing a poem, a song, a video, or even dressing up as a meme, places a spot in the challenge. Tomahawk Today will feature the winning student.

While waiting to check out her son, sophomore Patrick Roberts, Kimberly Roberts indulges in a wall dedicated to the figures of African American history. “I think it is important recognize the people that are genuinely good. Frederick Douglass was a good man,” Roberts said. “Some of my favorite quotes are from him….We should continue to teach our children about great people like him. These are the people our kids need to emulate.”

On the second day of Black History Month, sophomores Sam Smith and Bethel Mamo look over the posters commemorating the month at the front office. “Because black people make up a huge portion of both our history and our population, it’s important to know sections of our history that deal with them, and not just them specifically, but the relations with all aspects and facets of our society,” Smith said.
