Rose Ordonio, a senior at NC, is a returning member of The Chant. She hopes to continue writing about developing topics around the world, showcase her opinions and get involved in the Kennesaw community. She enjoys plants and is involved in NC's environmental clubs. Outside of school, she loves watching her favorite dramas, going out with her friends, and watching games from her hometown baseball team: the Atlanta Braves. Ordonio plans to study public relations in college and pursue journalism.

Hostile architecture works to eliminate the public spaces homeless people use for shelter or rest. Although city designers see this type of architecture as a solution to solve homelessness, it serves as a short-term solution that ignores the root causes and challenges of the homeless.

Former president Donald Trump and President Joe Biden won their party primaries, gaining an overwhelming amount of votes that could foreshadow their rematch in the 2024 presidential general election. Although Biden received 115 out of 117 Michigan delegates, a significant number of Democrats voted uncommitted to protest the Biden administration’s aid to Israel, which resulted in earning two delegates.

As communication has become an easy task due to the digital age, learning other languages has connected diverse groups of people around the world. Not only does a multilingual skill set benefit one’s cultural understanding and effective communication, but it also widens the opportunities for new adults in the job market. For high schools such as NC that flaunt their International Studies magnet program, they should focus on increasing the diversity of language courses offered to further their appeal to their international focal point.

As February 1 marks the start of Black History Month, people worldwide recognize Black history and their remarkable achievements, mainly in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. During February, people support Black businesses, visit historical African American sites, learn about prominent Black figures and read Black literature. While people continue to spread awareness about Black history, the efforts of strong Black individuals still linger today, most of which contribute to our everyday lives. As Americans live in the comfort of their suburban homes and listen to news broadcasters discuss Hamas and Israel, Palestinian journalists courageously showcase the massacre that innocent civilians routinely endure in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. At a time when prominent American organizations may avoid discussing the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians, listening to the journalists in Gaza remains important and Americans should amplify their voices. Although individuals may identify calls for Palestinian freedom as anti-Semitic language, exposing the reality of Palestinians constantly under attack does not convey hatred toward Jewish people.

Iowans bundled up in layers of their warmest clothing to cast their ballot for the next Republican Party presidential nominee in the 2024 presidential election. January 15, the Republican party held its caucuses across Iowa, where registered Republicans could choose which Republican candidate as their nominee choice. Predicted by the polls, Trump dominated, taking home 20 out of Iowa’s 40 delegates. His strong Grand Old Party (GOP) challengers battled for second place, with Florida governor Ron DeSantis narrowly taking the spot and former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley receiving third place. As the Iowa battle concludes, GOP candidates now race to New Hampshire for its upcoming Republican primary.

Voting stands as an important feature of the United States’ representative democracy. To vote, eligible voters must register before casting their ballot. States that implement strict voter registration procedures have seen lower rates of voter turnout in comparison to those states that employ convenient ways of registering to vote, such as automatic voter registration. States should employ new, convenient ways of registering to vote to increase voter turnout and ensure that everyone holds the same chance to act on their democratic duty.

The NC Swim and Dive team entered the Pope Plunger meet with hopes of beating their personal records and successfully achieving the county cut. After the team finished their dryland exercises and swam swiftly in the Cobb Aquatic Center, the boys and girls both placed 4th in their respective competitions. Dylan Pham, the sole diver for the NC team, successfully outperformed all participating schools and earned 1st place.

Friday, December 1, a resolution for the future of the scandal-ridden New York Republican representative George Santos resulted in his expulsion in a House of Representatives vote. With 311 of his colleagues voting yes, it overwhelmingly passed the two-thirds majority to oust the lawmaker. This rare event has left Santos to hold the title of the sixth member of Congress to join the list of members expelled from the House. The vacant seat in the House now presses the issue of the Republican and Democratic parties competing for seats in the slim Republican majority House.

October 3, California representative Kevin McCarthy became the first Speaker of the House forced out of the position after the House of Representatives voted to leave the seat vacant. Merely days after passing a stopgap bill to temporarily alleviate the government’s budget battle, a motion called to vote on removing McCarthy involved his opposition from far-right Republicans. With the seat left vacant and Speaker Pro Tempore in place, Congress stands essentially paralyzed as Republicans rush to put forth a republican candidate for the office of the speaker elections.

Morocco experienced a devastating earthquake on September 8, leaving homes and buildings in rubble and piles of bricks. The number of disaster victims continues to rise as rescue and aid trek up rural and isolated communities to the quake’s epicenter in the High Atlas Mountains. The region contained an abundance of historic buildings, which now show damage from facing the brunt of the quake. Due to the widely-used home structure composition, a lack of building integrity can contribute to casualties resulting from the quake.

With the popularity of “The Summer I Turned Pretty” and “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before”, Jenny Han has gained recognition for the teenage romance within her works. Despite her main characters all containing Asian heritage, they appear in predominantly white spaces, preventing a connection with their own culture and other minorities. The COVID-era Title 42 came to an end Thursday, May 11. Since 2020, the act has turned migrants away 2.8 million times at the border according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Earlier efforts to end Title 42 by the Biden administration received pushback from Republican opposition, allowing the enforcement of the policy to extend from Trump to the present administration. The policy faced backlash from immigrant rights groups for months, citing the policys discrimination toward Latin American countries.

Leaks in the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines turned up after recorded activity consistent with explosions. These leaks come as Europe faces an energy crisis within the Russian and Ukraine conflict and pressure for energy demand in the future. The catastrophic environmental impact of the leaks also contributes to the growing issue of climate change. The pipelines supplied natural gas all over Europe but stopped in August after months of gas reduction from Russia’s state-controlled company, Gazprom, cut off supply. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) brought the speculation of sabotage. While no government formally blames any parties, talks of Russias involvement as the cause speculates around Europe.

Thursday, September 1, a team from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) assessed the condition of Europe’s biggest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhzhia. The plant provides electricity to more than half of Ukrainians and other countries in Europe. The Russian-controlled site experienced concerns over the lack of safety measures due to fighting. A report published September 5 by the IAEA explained the destruction of crucial structures in the plant could lead to a nuclear disaster. The report urges both Ukraine and Russia to demilitarize the site to prevent a dangerous nuclear situation.
